When Woland appears to Styopa he says: «Here I am!». Bulgakov has considered this exclamation as a possible title for The Master and Margarita. It comes from «Me voici!», the words used by Mephistopheles in the opera Faust by Charles Gounod, when he appears to Faust for the first time.
