Streamed subtitled films and TV-series

For those who regret that this website no longer offers subtitled films based on the works of Mikhail Bulgakov, there may be a - partly - alternative. The streaming platform MUBI has in its catalog almost all films and TV series that we used to offer.

MUBI was founded in 2007 under the name The Authors. Its founder was Turkish entrepreneur Efe Çakarel who searched in vain for a platform to watch the movie In the Mood for Love in a cafe in Tokyo, Japan. That was not possible, so the idea arose to start a platform for cinephiles, with an emphasis on classic, cult and arthouse films. He did not aim to show the big blockbusters, but the less commercial titles. At least as far as the western world is concerned, because the TV series Master i Margarita by director Vladimir Bortko , for example, which was only distributed to a limited extent in the West, broke all ratings records in Russia when it was broadcast in December 2005.

The catalog of MUBI contains a remarkable number of film versions of works by Bulgakov and shows a large part of the films that you already know from this website, and which have already been subtitled in different languages by your webmaster:

Master i Margarita - TV-series - Vladimir Bortko - 2005
Master i Margarita - Film - Yuri Kara - 2011
Mistrz i Małgorzata - TV-series - Maciej Wojtyszko - 1990
Il maestro e Margherita - Film - Aleksandar Petrovic - 1972
Pilate and others - TV-film - Andrzej Wajda - 1972
Incident in Judea - TV-film - Paul Bryers - 1992
Woland - Film - Michael Lockshin - 2022
Heart of a Dog - Miniseries - Vladimir Bortko -1988
Cuore di cane - Film - Alberto Lattuada - 1976
Morphine - Film - Aleksej Balabanov - 2008
The Flight- Film - Alexander Alov and Vladimir Naumov - 1970
Ivan Vasilievich - Film - Leonid Gaidai - 1973
The Days of the Turbins - Miniseries - Vladimir Basov - 1976

In the MUBI catalogue, I could not find two of the film adaptations that we offered: the great TV series The White Guard by director Sergey Snezhkin from 2012 and the film Black Snow by directors Oleg Babitsky and Yuri Goldin from 2002. On the other hand, the film Woland, which will only be released next year, is already on the list.

Please note: these films are not all available at the same time. The offer is so wide that not all films can be streamed at the same time, and the offer is regularly refreshed. Movies disappear and are replaced by others. You can enter your email address to be kept informed of the new offers. MUBI makes it a point of honour to come up with one new film every day.

At the time of writing this, MUBI is showing Aleksey Balabanov's film Morphine. I used my free trial period, and I could choose between subtitles in English, Dutch, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish. Both the image quality and the Dutch subtitles were decent, except for a few minor flaws.

However, it could be done a little more carefully, because the trailer that is shown with Yuri Kara's film from 1994 shows the wrong images. The fragments we see are not from that film, but from Vladimir Bortko's TV series from 2005.

After a free trial of 7 days, a subscription to MUBI costs 9.99 € per month. It automatically renews until canceled.

MUBI can be viewed on a variety of devices, including Apple TV, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku. It is also available on a number of smart TVs, smartphones and tablets, and on web browsers such as Safari and Chrome. If you want to watch Mubi on PlayStation or XBOX consoles, it's best to order it from Amazon Channels.
