Master i Margarita - 2003

David Avdysh

David Avdyshevich Avdysh (°1952), born in an Assyrian family in in Zhitomir, Ukraine, is a choreographer who graduated in 1970 from the State Choregrafic Institute in Kyiv. Later he went to the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory in Leningrad, where he graduated in 1980.

After a glitzy start with a choreography which he could create for Petrushka by Igor Stravinsky when he studied in Leningrad, Avdysh's career went quickly downhill. For nearly a quarter of a century, he would not have any premieres.

He worked as a freelance choreographer in Saint Petersburg and other cities until, in 2002, he became the choreographer of the Tchaikovsky Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre in Perm. There he caused some fuss when he created the ballet Master i Margarita.

For this ballet, which was supposed to be the apotheosis for the 2002-2003 season, David Avdysh did not use original music, but compositions of Gustav Mahler, Dmitri Shostakovich, Hector Berlioz, Astor Piazzolla and other composers. The reviews in the press were not nice for this attempt to show a theatrical interpretation of the novel. Some critics were very tough and destructive. You can watch the video on this site to judge by yourself whether they were right.

In 2003, Avdysh left the Perm ballet, and after an intermediate step at the Ballet of Saint Petersburg, he started working with leading figure skaters and creating choreographies for show ballets. In 2007, the Master i Margarita ballet was performed again by the Ballet of the National Opera in Kyiv, Ukraine.
