Context

This version - After 17 years of discussions and negotiations, this film was officialy released in the Russian cinema theatres in April 2011. The film you can order on this page is the re-mastered official 118 minutes version which is shown in the cinema theatres, and which we subtitled in English, German, French and Dutch.

Older version - In 1994, director Yuri Kara completed his cinematic adaptation of The Master and Margarita. It was a 3 hours and 22 minutes film. For various reasons, the production remained hidden from the general public for many years, although a bootleg DVD circulated among Bulgakov enthusiasts. The film wasn't officially released on DVD until 2011, but in a significantly shortened version of 1 hour and 58 minutes.

The 3 hours and 22 minutes bootleg version from 1994 had poor image quality because it was recorded from an old VHS tape. The official 1 hour and 58 minutes version from 2011 had much better picture quality but was missing 1 hour and 24 minutes of the film originally edited by Kara. Anyone who wanted to see Yuri Kara's film therefore faced a dilemma: strain their eyes to see the director's complete work, or save their eyes by watching a significantly shortened version.

A partial solution to this problem was offered a few years later by Russian film enthusiast Vadim Anokhin. Anokhin skillfully intertwined the two versions of Yuri Kara's film into a single version. The result is a 3 hours and 22 minutes film, with 1 hour and 58 minutes of good image quality and 1 hour and 24 minutes of slightly lower quality, featuring smooth transitions from one version to the other. It's also striking how the distracting background noise from the old version has been skillfully removed.

For all these reasons, we will be offering this version in our webshop in the future as the «director’s cut» of Yuri Kara, and we have also made it available with subtitles in six languages: Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
