Welkom

Over the 20-year history of the Master and Margarita website, I've been repeatedly asked to develop initiatives for a club, a circle, or an association for people who love the works of Mikhail Bulgakov.

I've long considered how I could organise this, although I have already sporadically supported local initiatives of various kinds in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. But now that I've translated all the books I wanted to translate and subtitled all the films and TV series I wanted to subtitle - except for one - I'm ready. On December 1, 2025, the Mikhail Bulgakov Circle was established, and anyone can join.

Objectives

The Mikhail Bulgakov Circle strives to become an international and diverse group of people from very diverse backgrounds and perhaps influenced by very different cultures, but who share the common characteristic of being united by their love for the works of Mikhail Afanasievich Bulgakov.

The objectives of the Mikhail Bulgakov Circle include:

Keeping members informed of all developments related to Bulgakov's works, such as new publications, new translations, reading clubs, films, theatre performances, and other events.

• helping members to better understand, analyze, and interpret Mikhail Bulgakov's works.

organising in-person and virtual meetings and conversation table tto share experiences, questions, and opinions.

offering or negotiating with third parties membership benefits and material support for any initiative that can help achieve the aforementioned objectives.

In addition to initiatives initiated by the Bulgakov Circle itself, all members are free to propose ideas or implement them themselves, and they can count on our logistical support.

Membership Terms and Benefits

Membership is valid for three years and can be renewed for additional three-year periods. Members who join in 2025 will have a slightly longer membership period, until December 31, 2028.

Individual Members

A three-year membership costs € 100 for an individual.

To make membership even more attractive, we offer membership benefits.

For three years, you can enjoy a permanent 25 % discount on all your webshop orders. You can use the membership number you receive after registering as a discount code. These discounts do not apply to wall calendars, but you won't mind when you read the next benefit.

For three years, every November, you will receive a free new wall calendar for the following year, featuring new illustrations of The Master and Margarita (2027), The White Guard (2028), and Heart of a Dog (2029).

For three years, you can enjoy a permanent 25% discount for two people on all performances of Mikhail Bulgakov's plays if you order through us.

For three years, you can count on free personal support, advice, and documentation if you have questions about obtaining copyrights, writing a thesis or essay, or any other occasion where my accumulated knowledge of Bulgakov and his works can be of assistance. Until now, I have provided this service free of charge to anyone who requested it, but from January 1, 2026, it will be reserved for members of the Mikhail Bulgakov Circle.

Groups

For a group - a readers' circle, a theatre company, or any other type of association - membership costs € 250, with a maximum of 15 members enjoying the individual benefits listed above. The group can also enjoy an additional benefit.

For three years, the group can count on free logistical support for its events or meetings, including posters, mailings, animated PowerPoint presentations, press releases, and social media campaigns. If desired, your webmaster can deliver the presentation on-site in English, Dutch or French, provided the group covers travel and accommodation expenses.

Concrete plans 2026

Here you will find some concrete plans that the Mikhail Bulgakov Circle plans to implement or initiate in 2026.

• Digitizing the Bulgakov archive of the Master and Margarita website and making the documents accessible to members. The archive currently contains 13,368 pages and is still being expanded.

• Establishing private member pages on social media where members can connect and exchange information.

• Negotiating with companies and theatres to obtain discounts for their performances.

• Designing a platform for virtual meetings with researchers, translators, artists, directors, philologists, authors, musicians, and other experts who have fascinating stories to tell about Mikhail Bulgakov and his works.
