My Poor, Poor Master
Context
Mikhail Bulgakov wrote eight different versions of The Master and Margarita between 1928 and 1940. The novel's title changed several times, and characters disappeared to make place for others. At one point, the novel even featured two large talking cats. New satirical elements were added over the years as circumstances in the Soviet Union or the author's life changed. Therefore, following the novel's evolution also tells us a great deal about the author's life. Until now, only Russian speakers have been able to follow the evolution of these different versions - or what remains of them. They owe this to the book Мой Бедный, бедный мастер (My Poor, Poor Master) by Viktor Ivanovich Losev, a collection of the surviving manuscripts of all versions of the novel The Master and Margarita, written by Mikhail Bulgakov between 1928 and 1940.
